Cherokee was the final government in the county to sign a resolution supporting the facility, which will be housed in the hospital’s existing outpatient surgery center. The council approved the resolution unanimously, according to the report.

The new surgery center will operate as a joint venture between Helen Keller Hospital and 20 local surgeons. The ownership is expected to be a 49/51 physician to hospital split. Keller senior consultant Ralph Wilson said the town council’s support will help reiterate the need to the Alabama Certificate of Need Review Board for the surgical unit.

According to the report, the approval is expected to meet push-back from RegionalCare, a Brentwood, Tenn.-based health system that owns several local hospitals.
