3 physicians facing lawsuits in 1 week

Here are three updates on physicians facing in lawsuits since March 13, as reported by Becker’s:

1. An Iowa appeals court has sided with Matthew Kettman, MD, after he was sued for defamation by a former Cedar Falls police officer who resigned amid a prescription painkiller investigation. 

2. Tonya Becker, RN, a former employee of recently shuttered Sturm Cosmetic Surgery in Ames, Iowa, has filed a lawsuit against her former employer, Lindsay Sturm, DO, and Sturm Cosmetic Surgery. Ms. Becker alleges that she was wrongfully terminated by Dr. Sturm in 2024 for “refusing to compromise patient safety, rejecting illegal and unethical directives, and standing up against a toxic work environment.”

3. A $25.6 million malpractice lawsuit against orthopedic surgeon Richard Edelson, MD, is now underway. The lawsuit was filed by former Portland (Ore.) Timbers goalkeeper Jake Gleeson, who alleged that a 2018 surgery ended his professional soccer career.
