Shortages of raw materials, increased demand for some drugs and a shrinking pool of suppliers have created a serious shortage of various medications. According to the FDA, the small number of manufacturers means that the actions of one company can significantly affect the drug market. The FDA itself has come under fire for exacerbating the shortage with what some call an overly lengthy inspection process.
Lawmakers have recently proposed legislation that would require drug manufacturers to notify the FDA if they’re running low on drugs to give the agency a chance to find a different drug source.
