Hospital leaders managing anesthesia economics should track a short list of paired operating and revenue cycle metrics rather than reviewing cost and collections separately, according to a white paper from Surgical Directions and Ventra Health.
These 10 metrics make up the paper’s recommended executive dashboard:
- Adjusted utilization: How much allocated OR or procedural capacity is used, including turnover time.
- Cost per anesthetizing location: Total anesthesia labor and related cost relative to staffed locations.
- Provider productivity: Clinical output by anesthesiologist, CRNA or CAA against expected availability.
- Locum expense: Premium temporary labor spend and trend, which often predicts enrollment complications.
- Cost per case: Anesthesia payroll, benefits, premium labor and related cost divided by cases.
- Net cash collection: Actual cash collected against expectation or forecast.
- Cash per case or unit: Average cash collected per unit of clinical work.
- Days in A/R: Average time to convert billed work into cash.
- A/R over 120 days: Share of receivables outstanding more than 120 days.
- Insurance net collection rate: Collectible insurance revenue received after contractual adjustments.
At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
