Physician pay increases in 4 specialties

Physician pay went up across specialties in 2023, according to the 2024 “Physician Report” from Medical Economics.

Medical Economics collected data from its physician audience on salaries, productivity, malpractice rates and the state of the profession. Data covers 2023 and was collected from physicians who responded to email invitations during the first and second quarter of 2024.

Here is a breakdown of average pretax income for both employed physicians and practice owners in 2023:

Internal medicine: $270,000, up from $253,000 in 2022

Family medicine: $265,000, up from $245,000 in 2022

Pediatrics: $235,000, up from $216,500 in 2022

OB-GYN: $290,000, up from 285,500 in 2022
