How much physicians earn in the 10 best states to practice medicine

Physicians earned an average salary of $288,500 in Wisconsin, the best state for physicians to practice in 2024.

Medscape ranked states on five metrics to determine the top states to practice in: physician compensation, cost of living, malpractice premiums, health of the state’s residents and physician burnout levels.

Salary data for physicians comes from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which updated its workforce data in April. 

Here are the average annual wages for physicians in the 10 best states to practice medicine:

1. Wisconsin: $288,500

2. Minnesota: $302,110

3. North Dakota: $351,270

4. Hawaii: $304,140

5. Ohio: $271,040

6. Alaska: $284,240

7. New Mexico: $302,650

8. Oregon: $288,930

9. Washington: $288,560

10. Massachusetts: $229,980
