Researchers compared levels of bile salts and cholesterol in PXR-null mice and CGD-sensitive C57L mice after a lithogenic diet. PXR-null mice developed diet-induced CGD, evidenced by decreased biliary bile salts and phospholipids and an increased cholesterol saturation index.

C57L mice given a PXR agonist or St. John’s wort did not develop CGD, shown by increased biliary bile salt and decreased CSI.

Researchers suggest that PXR may be an effective target for CGD prevention.
