EndoSerter is used for a type of corneal transplant called endothelial keratoplasty, which occurs when a patient needs a thin layer of endothelial cells replaced but does not require a full corneal transplant. The device inserts cells into the eye, protecting the corneal tissue from damage.
The device is intended to replace forceps, which can crush tissue while gripping the cornea, according to the release. EndoSerter is designed to result in a smaller incision, no sutures and reduced operating time.
