GIs among the top 5 revenue generating specialties for hospitals

Gastroenterology remains a high earning specialty for both physicians and hospitals, according to the 2019 inpatient/outpatient revenue survey from physician search firm Merritt Hawkins.

Merritt Hawkins emailed a survey to 3,000 hospital CFOs and other financial managers across the U.S. from October 2018 to December 2018 to compile its report.

Three things to know about GI revenue:

1. GIs came in the No. 5 spot for the highest revenue generating specialties, generating $2,965,277 on average. Neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, cardiovascular surgeons and invasive cardiologists generated more than $3 million in revenue for hospitals on average.

2. Compared to the amount of revenue generated for hospitals, GI earn $487,000 on average, which is more than cardiovascular surgeon salary at $425,000.

3. The amount of revenue GIs generate rose 108 percent from 2016’s number at $1,422,677
