Highland Hospital’s $70M expansion approved — 4 insights

The Rochester City Council unanimously approved the University of Rochester (N.Y.) Medical Center’s Highland Hospital’s proposed $70 million expansion, City Newspaper reports.

1. Highland is adding four stories to its three-story surgery center.

2. The new addition will allow Highland to convert 60 semi-private rooms to fully private rooms.

3. Highland Park neighborhood residents had concerns about Highland Hospital’s vertical expansion, but the hospital worked with the residents to reach a compromise on a maximum height of 155 feet.

4. Highland Park Neighborhood Association member Michael Thompson said, “People were concerned that the hospital would just overrun the neighborhood at some point. And I think they understand that.”
