CMS Announces Partial Freeze for ICD-9-CM and ICD-10

To help with the transition to the ICD-10 coding system, CMS has announced a partial code set freeze beginning in Oct. 2011, according to AHA News and other industry reports.

The schedule outlined by CMS is as follows:

 

Starting Oct. 1, 2011, CMS suspends regular annual updates for the ICD-9-CM and ICD-10 code sets.

 

On Oct. 1, 2012, there will be a limited number of updates made to ICD-9-CM and ICD-10 to capture new technologies and diseases codes.

 

On Oct. 1, 2013, there will be a limited number of updates made to ICD-10 to capture new technologies and diagnoses.

 

No further updates to ICD-9-CM will occur after Oct. 1, 2013, since it will be replaced by ICD-10 on this date.

 

On Oct. 1, 2014, regular updates to ICD-10 will resume.
