1. The group’s origins trace back to April 2002 when The Joint Commission appointed a panel of patient safety experts to share their expertise on a newsletter, Sentinel Event Alert.
2. In 2002, The Joint Commission named the panel of experts the Sentinel Event Advisory Group and the group has since expanded its scope.
3. The panel became the Patient Safety Advisory Group in 2009 and features experts such as physicians, nurses, risk managers and pharmacists who shed light on key patient safety issues in different healthcare settings.
4. The Patient Safety Advisory Group advises The Joint Commission on strategies to assist healthcare organizations in assessing and minimizing patient safety risks.
5. Each year, the group recommends program-specific National Patient Safety Goals for The Joint Commission’s board of commissioners to adopt.
6. The group also gives recommendations for Sentinel Event Alert’s possible future topics.
7. There are 15 advisory group members.
