Here are five things to know:
1. The administration’s earlier budget proposal sought to truncate NIH funding by $6 billion next year.
2. The proposal seeks to slash $50 million from Institutional Development Award grant funding, which aims to increase biomedical research across the country.
3. The other cuts would relate to reducing NIH research grant funding.
4. The NIH funding cut is a series of reductions the administration is proposing. The administration is seeking a $314 million cut to CDC funding for its HIV/AID global efforts as well as occupational safety and public health preparedness grants.
5. The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology released a statement opposing the cuts, saying “The president continues to put the health and well-being of Americans in danger to move forward a so-called ‘hard power budget,’ even while leaders from his own party view investments in biomedical research as critical to the nation’s security.”
