Here are five key notes:
1. The procedure is designed to correct vision for people with nearsightedness with a minimally invasive approach. The procedure removes the lenticule from within the cornea through a tiny incision with the Zeiss VisuMAX femtosecond laser.
2. Johnathan Christenbury, MD, performed the first procedure, which takes approximately 35 seconds. He was the first surgeon in the U.S. who wasn’t part of the clinical research team to perform the procedure. He previously performed more than 100,000 vision correction procedures with the VisuMAX.
3. The procedure is designed for patients who are 22 years old or more who wear glasses or contacts.
4. The incision is 80 percent smaller than the traditional LASIK procedure and patients aren’t required to wear shields after surgery. The procedure has a lower incidence of dry eye syndrome as well.
5. Patients are expected to return to regular activities within 24 hours of surgery.
