6 specialties with the highest variation in physician charges to Medicare payment ratios — Anesthesiology ranks as #1

JAMA published a study analyzing which specialties charged more than the Medicare program actually pays, with anesthesiologists topping the list.

Boston-based Johns Hopkins researchers included data from 429,273 physicians spanning 54 medical specialties. Across individual physicians, physician charge-to Medicare payment ratios ranged between 1.0 and 101.1, with a median of 2.5.

Here are six specialties with the highest median of physician charge-to-Medicare payment ratios.

1. Anesthesiology: 5.8
2. Interventional radiology: 4.5
3. Emergency medicine: 4.0
4. Pathology: 4.0
5. Neurosurgery: 4.0
6. Diagnostics radiology: 3.8
