Here are five things to know:
1. The scammers are sending a notice, which claims to be an IRS CP-200 notice, to Americans by mail. The CP-2000 notices are computer-generated letters asking taxpayers for payments which are based on a mismatch between a taxpayer’s return and what a third party reports.
2. Typically, the fake notices ask taxpayers to pay a balance which is linked to ACA coverage for 2014 as taxpayers lacking the proper coverage must pay a penalty.
3. Since October 2013, Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration has received more than 1.7 million complaints from Americans reporting phone calls from scammers impersonating IRS agents.
4. More than 8,800 Americans have paid more than $47 million due to the scams since October 2013.
5. In the wake of the scam, IRS sent out a copy of a real CP-200-notice, which is typically six pages to seven pages long.
