17% of physicians receive 1-star rating on Vitals — Not due to outcomes: 8 key notes on what matters to patients

Vitals surveyed 6 million patient reviews online and found in many cases physicians aren’t meeting their patients’ needs.

Here are eight key findings:

1. The top highest ranked specialists on Vitals are:

• Neuromusculoskeletal specialists
• Thoracic Surgeons
• Podiatrists
• Plastic surgeons
• Colon and rectal surgeons

2. The lowest ranked specialists are:

• Psychiatrists
• Preventative medicine specialists
• Pain specialists
• Emergency doctors
• Neurologists

3. Around 75 percent of physicians receive four or five stars — a top rating.

4. Patients give 17 percent of physicians the lowest ranking of one star.

5. Most of the one-star reviews didn’t mention diagnosis or treatment plan; instead they focused on the patient experience. These unsatisfied patients reported dirty offices and not liking the way their physicians talked to them. They also complained it was hard to make appointments and calls weren’t being returned.

6. The patient’s experience before seeing the physician affected overall satisfaction. The top words used was: time, staff and office. “Care” also ranked at the top of the list, and satisfied patients also said they had a long relationship with their physician for years.

7. The states with the most opinions on vitals were:

• Washington, DC
• New Jersey
• Florida
• New York
• Connecticut

8. The states with the fewest concentration of reviews were:

• South Dakota
• North Dakota
• Mississippi
• Montana
• Iowa
