Newly discovered mosquito virus defies infection norms: 6 key takeaways

The U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases discovered a mosquito virus split into various pieces, according to npr.

Here are six key takeaways:

1. This finding defies normality, as other viruses are composed of a few genes neatly packaged. When infecting a cell, this packaged virus injects its genes through the cell’s surface.

2. This newly discovered virus, Guaico Culex, is different than most viruses, however, because it’s  composed of five separately packaged genes.

4. A mosquito must contract at least four of the virus’ five genes to get infected. The researchers said they do not believe the virus can infect people, yet.

5. If infected with the fifth gene, the mosquito will likely suffer a more serious infection.

6. This finding is part of a larger study to discover mosquito viruses that may soon infect humans.
