24M Americans seeking coverage, $927B in reduced spending: What is the potential fall out of dismantling the ACA? 5 things to know

An Urban Institute study found 24 million Americans would be left seeking coverage if the government repealed the Affordable Care Act, according to The Hill.

The study only analyzed the ACA repeal’s impact, and did not evaluate replacement plans’ impact on coverage and healthcare spending.

Here are five things to know:

1. The report found 14.5 million Americans would lose their Medicaid or the Children’s Heath Insurance Program coverage, while 8.8 million people would lose individual private coverage the ACA offers. Nearly 700,000 Americans would lose health insurance through their employers.

2. However, the ACA’s repeal would lower government healthcare spending by $927 billion over a decade.

3. While the ACA’s repeal would lower spending, the healthcare deficit would increase as dismantling the health law would cause the repeal of the ACA tax increase and Medicare cuts.

4. State spending would escalate by $68.5 billion as the states would pick up the tab for Americans without insurance.

5. The study concluded, “ACA repeal would reduce federal government spending, which appears to be one of the goals of those advocating repeal. However, that reduction in spending comes at a cost in other areas. The number of uninsured people would increase by 24 million or more.”
