Journal of the Association of American Medical Colleges published the study, in which researchers assessed medical students’ alcohol abuse/dependence, burnout, depression, suicidality, quality of life and fatigue.
Here are four insights:
1. Of the respondents, 32.4 percent met the criteria for alcohol abuse/dependence.
2. Researchers found students who were burned out, depressed or reported low mental or emotional quality of life were more likely to have alcohol abuse/dependence.
3. Medical students exhibiting emotional exhaustion and depersonalization characteristics of burnout were likely to have alcohol abuse/dependence.
4. Researchers concluded burnout was strongly associated with alcohol abuse/dependence among sampled U.S. medical students.
