The researchers distributed the survey to nearly 5,000 individuals between May and August.

Here are five key notes:

1. Massachusetts leads the nation in the percentage of insured residents.

2. Researchers found although the insurance coverage rate is 96.4 percent, 13.6 percent of residents are uninsured at some point in the year.

3. In the state, 87.3 percent of the uninsured in 2015 are working age adults and were disproportionately likely to be male, single, Hispanic and with a family income of less than $46,800 a year.

4. More than 50 percent of respondents cited the cost of coverage as a primary reason for forgoing care.

5. “The truth about the health insurance system is it’s just very complicated,” said Aron Boros, executive director of the Center for Health Information and Analysis, which undertakes the annual survey. “There are people who are truly ineligible for subsidies, people who don’t know the subsidies are available, and people who, even with the subsidies, insurance is too expensive.”
