Modified Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection Used to Remove Large Ileal Lipoma

A team from Juntendo University Nerima Hospital in Tokyo, Japan, used a modified endoscopic submucosal dissection technique to remove a large ileal lipoma from a 62 year-old man, according to an article published in the April 7 issue of the World Journal of Gastroenterology.

Lipoma is relatively common in the colon but is less common in the small intestine, and most are incidentally detected at endoscopy and are usually small and asymptomatic, according to the article. Surgical resection is commonly recommended to remove such significant lipomas with a limited pedicle and larger than 2 cm in size, as endoscopic resection may result in unfavorable complications such as intestinal perforations.

Surgeons used the modified ESD procedure in combination with endoscopic unroofing technique (from the top to the bottom like peeling a banana) to remove the ileal lipoma, according to the article.
