The Metro Detroit Health Insurance Program pays for premium costs for consumers who can’t afford federally subsidized rates, according to the Detroit Free Press.

1. Tom Berkowitz founded the nonprofit in 2014.

2. The nonprofit allows consumers to switch from bronze plans to silver plans, which have higher premiums but less out-of-pocket costs.

3. The group has raised $70,000 and helped more than 60 households.

4. Mr. Berkowitz funded the majority of the program in its first year, but now seeks public donations. He said every $3,000 donation will be matched 100 percent.

5. He hopes to raise $400,000 in public donations.
