GI physician leader to know: Dr. William Carey of Cleveland Clinic

William Carey, MD, is the senior hepatologist in the department of gastroenterology at Cleveland Clinic and he also serves as the director for Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Continuing Medical Education. He is the former director of the Hepatology (Liver) Center. He is a past president of the American College of Gastroenterology, as well as a fellow of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. He is a delegate to the American Medical Association.

Dr. Carey is board-certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology and focuses on biliary disorders, biliary tract disease, drug induced liver disease, end stage liver disease, endoscopy, general hepatology, hepatitis B and hepatitis C. He serves on the editorial boards of Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine and Practical Gastroenterology. He has also won the Samuel Weiss Award from the American College of Gastroenterology.

Dr. Carey earned his medical degree at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. He completed his residency at Pacific Presbyterian Medical Center in San Francisco. Additionally, he has completed a fellowship in nephrology at Institute of Medical Sciences in San Francisco and a fellowship gastroenterology at Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic.
