4 tips to addressing physician credentialing with payers during an acquisition

In the event of a changed ownership arrangement of a surgery center or physician practice, physician and staff credentialing must be readdressed for billing purposes. Here are four tips to handle potential changes from Healthcare Finance News.

1. Sale of physician practices triggers new physician identification numbers under which physicians must be recredentialted. Be aware of this fact.

2. Plan time for recredentialing, since it can take several months.

3. Complete recredentialing by the time the practice or center transaction is complete. Otherwise, it’s not possible to bill under the physician’s old identification number, which makes billing complicated. Once credentialing is no longer pending, bills can be submitted, but cash flow will be decreased in the interim.

4. Consider keeping the old electronic records system if it is tied to billing practices. Reconfiguring the billing processes could seriously disrupt patient care, productivity or both.
