New SGR Patch to Costs Would Exceed $8B

According to a Congressional Budget Office report, legislation that would shield physicians from a 24 percent Medicare reimbursement reduction next year would cost about $8.3 billion from 2014 to 2018.

The proposal would delay the steep pay cuts required by Medicare’s sustainable growth rate and give physicians a 0.5 percent payment update through March 2014, giving lawmakers extra time to repeal and replace the SGR, according to the report.
