Which Physicians Are Closest to Making the ICD-10 Switch? 13 Statistics

The Oct. 1, 2014, ICD-10 implementation date is growing nearer. Here are 13 statistics on which physicians by specialty are prepared for the transition and which specialties are behind on preparation, according to an EHR Intelligence report.

An AAPC Client Services study examined the percentage of physicians by specialty that have the documentation to support the switch from ICD-9 to ICD-10.

Top eight physician specialties  

•    Plastic surgeons: 98 percent
•    Anesthesiologists: 87 percent
•    Dermatologists: 86 percent
•    General surgeons: 86 percent
•    Obstetricians and gynecologists: 84 percent
•    Psychologists: 81 percent
•    Urologists: 80 percent
•    Infectious disease specialists: 78 percent

Bottom five physician specialties

•    Internists: 58 percent
•    Urgent care physicians: 56 percent
•    Pulmonologists: 56 percent
•    Pediatricians: 53 percent
•    Gastroenterologists: 48 percent
