Here are three areas to note from the ICD-10-CM book that may be particularly challenging or new for physicians and coders:
1. Anemia. Anemia is a principal diagnosis with chemotherapy, immunotherapy or radiation therapy. It is a second diagnosis with a malignancy.
2. Circulatory system. Significant changes have been made from ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM in regard to hypertension with co-existing conditions.
3. Injuries. The seventh character comes into play with coding injuries, which have many new possibilities for codes. ICD-10 will include the healing status of fractures.
