Cataract removal, which can cost up to $3,500 per eye, is unaffordable for many people without access to health coverage. To participate in the free surgery day, people must have a visually significant cataract, no insurance and earn no more than 250 percent of the federal poverty level.
Jeffrey Ing, MD, ophthalmologist and president of Delta Eye, got the idea for the free surgery after participating in numerous medical mission trips to poor and developing countries.
