Study Finds 65% of Liver Transplant Patients Develop AMD

A three-year study led by Andrew Lotery, MD, ophthalmologist and professor at Southampton General Hospital in the U.K., has found that 65 percent of liver transplant patients developed age-related macular degeneration within five years of receiving the transplant, according to an Optometry Today report.

The complement factor H gene, which can cause the production of abnormal proteins in the liver, has been commonly found in macular degeneration patients, suggesting a link between AMD and liver conditions.

In light of the results, Dr. Lotery emphasized the need to monitor transplant patients’ eye health.
