New Macular Degeneration Test Could Avert Vision Loss

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill researchers have developed a blood test that may be able to predict when a macular degeneration patient will begin to lose his or her sight, according to a WRAL report.

A rare stem cell in the blood, a progenitor, functions as a barometer for macular degeneration activity. The UNC test is able to measure the progress of the disease through the progenitor.

The UNC small pilot test will move forward to a multicenter trial.
