HCPCS codes, which are updated annually by The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, include codes for durable medical equipment, orthotics, ambulance services, supplies, medications, dental procedures and services provided through the Outpatient Prospective Payment System.
CMS uses these codes in several ways. One is to differentiate between a preventative service and a therapeutic or diagnostic service. Other uses are as modifiers, which may change payment or may be merely informational.
