Study: TeamSTEPPS Program Boosts Residents’ Team Skills

A program designed to improve patient safety and teamwork could boost medical residents’ teamwork skills, according to a study published in the Archives of Surgery.

Researchers integrated the TeamSTEPPS program, developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, into the elective curriculum for medical residents. The curriculum included interactive didactic sessions, discussion groups, role-plays and videotaped simulations.

The researchers found the program helped improve medical residents’ teamwork skills, suggesting the TeamSTEPPS framework could be integrated into other medical schools’ curricula.
