This report indicates the total number of sentinel events reviewed by The Joint Commission is up to 8,859 from 1995 through this first quarter. The most frequently occurring sentinel events during the first quarter include unintentional retention of foreign bodies (42 events), delay in treatment (33 events) and operative or post-operative complications (19 events).
