Sen. Claire Ayer, chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Health and Welfare, said Sunday she expects a floor debate either Monday or Tuesday on legislation establishing a health insurance exchange.
Legislation headed to the Senate floor this week would require individuals and businesses with fewer than 50 employees to purchase insurance from the exchange. Those requirements would put slightly more than 90,000 in the exchange when it comes online in 2014.
The federal health reform law requires that states implement health insurance exchanges of their own design by 2014 or invite the federal government to step in and take over the process.
