The survey, which included responses from 3,063 of the ASA’s 28,000 practicing anesthesiologists, asked the question, “How has a drug shortage impacted your patients?” Seven anesthesiologists responded with, “Has resulted in death of a patient.”
Of the more than 3,000 respondents, 97.6 percent reported experiencing a shortage of at least one anesthetic, and 96 percent said they have had to use substitutes for particular patients and procedures.
