Hospital deal-making showed no signs of slowing in May, with at least 12 transactions, spanning completed acquisitions, signed agreements and letters of intent.
The month’s activity included a blockbuster merger between Atrium Health and WakeMed anchored by a $2 billion investment pledge, a multistate nonprofit combination between Sanford Health and North Memorial Health, and UPMC’s entry into Ohio through a deal with CommonSpirit Health.
Here are the 12 hospital deals Becker’s has reported on in the last month:
1. Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare completed its acquisition of Franciscan Health Olympia Fields (Ill.), a 214-bed hospital. It is Prime’s ninth in Illinois and 55th overall.
2. Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Sanford Health and Robbinsdale, Minn.-based North Memorial Health said May 8 they have signed a definitive agreement to come together as a single nonprofit health system.
3. Chicago-based CommonSpirit Health and Pittsburgh-based UPMC signed a definitive agreement to transfer ownership of Trinity Health System, based in Steubenville, Ohio, which includes multiple hospital facilities and clinics across the Ohio Valley.
4. Charlotte, N.C.-based Atrium Health and Raleigh, N.C.-based WakeMed Health & Hospitals announced plans to combine into a single health system, which the organizations said involves a $2 billion investment in Wake County (N.C.) to expand facilities, grow the workforce and broaden care access across North Carolina.
5. Irving, Texas-based Christus Health took over operations May 1 at Mount Pleasant, Texas-based Titus Regional Medical Center, and renamed it Christus Health – Mount Pleasant Hospital.
6. Rapid City (S.D.) Medical Center joined Monument Health, a Rapid City-based community health system, on May 1. The two parties signed a letter of intent for RCMC to join the five-hospital system in late January.
7. Farmington, Conn.-based UConn Health has signed a letter of intent with Putnam, Conn.-based Day Kimball Hospital and Bristol (Conn.) Health for the two parties to join the health system.
8. Springfield, Mass.-based Baystate Health has signed a definitive agreement to acquire a financially challenged hospital in the city from Hartford, Conn.-based Trinity Health of New England.
9. Quorum Health, a for-profit system headquartered in Brentwood, Tenn., sold Scenic Mountain Medical Center to San Angelo, Texas-based Shannon Health System.
10. Fulton County Medical Center in McConnellsburg, Pa., signed a nonbinding letter of intent to join Morgantown, W.Va.-based West Virginia University Health System.
11. Little Rock, Ark.-based Baptist Health reached a definitive agreement to acquire Magnolia (Ark.) Regional Medical Center.
12. Lebanon, Ind.-based Witham Health Services signed a nonbinding letter of intent to join Fort Wayne, Ind.-based Parkview Health.
