UC Irvine Eye Institute Awarded $3M for Retinal Degeneration Research

The Gavin Herbert Eye Institute at the UC Irvine Health system has received a $3 million research grant for age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa, according to a news release.

Ophthalmologist Henry Klassen, MD, and his team at UC Irvine Health have studied stem cell treatments on the blindness-causing diseases with promising results.
The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation issued the grant, allotting $1 million for medical instruments and $2 million to fund research fellowships related to the procedures. The foundation previously donated $2 million toward construction of a 70,000-square-foot university eye center, the first of its kind in Orange County, according to the release.
