Snowden River Surgery Center Medical Director Discusses Future of Cataract Surgery

Jay C. Grochmal, MD, medical director of Snowden River Surgery Center in Baltimore, said in a news release that the aging baby boomer population has increased demand for cataract surgery.

According to the report, Dr. Grochmal said certain innovations in cataract surgery, such as techniques that create smaller incisions and technology such as the Zeiss IOL master, have made surgery safer and more accurate. Patients no longer have to wait for their vision to deteriorate drastically before undergoing cataract surgery, and newer IOLs provide for better vision after surgery.

Dr. Grochmal received his medical degree from the University of Maryland and completed a rotating internship at the U.S. Public Health Hospital in Baltimore. He also completed a residency in the department of ophthalmology at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center, where he was chief resident.
