12 Statistics About Surgery Centers From MedPAC

Here are 12 statistics about ambulatory surgery centers and the ASC industry from the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission's (MedPAC) March 2011 Report to the Congress: Medicare Payment Policy.

 

1. In 2009, there were 5,260 Medicare-certified ASCs, an increase of 2.1 percent (109 ASCs) over 2008.

 

2. The number of Medicare-certified ASCs increased by 0.6 percent to 5,291 during the first three quarters of 2010, an annual growth rate of 0.8 percent.

 

3. From 2004 through 2008, the number of Medicare-certified ASCs grew by an annual rate of 5.8 percent.

 

4. From 2004 through 2009, an average of 307 new ASCs entered the Medicare program each year, while an average of 66 closed or merged with other facilities.

 

5. In 2009, there were 164 new Medicare-certified ASCs while 55 facilities closed or merged with other facilities.

 

6. From 2003 through 2009, the mean number of operating rooms per ASC increased from 2.5 to 2.6, although the media number of ORs remained the same at two.

 

7. Arizona has the most ASCs per Medicare beneficiary, followed by Washington, Idaho and Maryland, with each state having more than 30 ASCs per 100,000 beneficiaries.

 

8. New York had the fewest ASCs per beneficiary, followed by Vermont and West Virginia, with each state having fewer than five ASCs per 100,000 beneficiaries.

 

9. In 2009, most Medicare-certified ASCs were for-profit (96 percent) and located in urban areas (88 percent).

 

10. From 2004 through 2009, ASCs' Medicare revenue increased from $2.5 billion to $3.2 billion.

 

11. In 2009, ASCs served 3.3 million fee-for-service (FFS) Medicare beneficiaries, an increase of 1.2 percent over 2008.

 

12. In 2009, Medicare combined program and beneficiary spending on ASC services was $3.2 billion, an increase of 5.1 percent per FFS beneficiary over 2008.
