6 Statistics on Physician Risk Factors in a Surgery Center

Here are 6 statistics on physician risk factors in ambulatory surgery centers, according to VMG Health's ValueDriver ASC Survey 2011. In compiling the survey, VMG spoke with leaders of the 20 of the largest ASC management and operating companies in the United States.

1. High level of ownership in competing centers:
Very high risk factor: 60 percent
High risk factor: 33 percent
Medium risk factor: 7 percent
Low risk factor: 0 percent
Very low risk factor: 0 percent

2. Significant number of active physicians nearing retirement age:
Very high risk factor: 53 percent
High risk factor: 40 percent
Medium risk factor: 7 percent
Low risk factor: 0 percent
Very low risk factor: 0 percent

3. High reliance upon few physicians to drive majority of volume/revenue:

Very high risk factor: 53 percent
High risk factor: 40 percent
Medium risk factor: 7 percent
Low risk factor: 0 percent
Very low risk factor: 0 percent

4. Low number of physician investors in the ASC:
Very high risk factor: 40 percent
High risk factor: 33 percent
Medium risk factor: 20 percent
Low risk factor: 7 percent
Very low risk factor: 0 percent

5. Specialty mix of the physicians active in the ASC:
Very high risk factor: 7 percent
High risk factor: 47 percent
Medium risk factor: 27 percent
Low risk factor: 7 percent
Very low risk factor: 13 percent

6. High reliance upon non-owner physicians to derive significant volume/revenue:
Very high risk factor: 27 percent
High risk factor: 40 percent
