University of Cincinnati Surgeon Performs New Bariatric Procedure

Brad Watkins, MD, of University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, outlined a new weight loss procedure in a Cincinnati Examiner report.

The procedure, called gastric plication surgery, reduces the size of the stomach with stitches. Dr. Watkins says the procedure is safer than other popular bariatric surgeries because no part of the stomach is removed, the intestines are not rearranged and no device is implanted. He currently performs the procedure in an ASC, but patients are kept overnight in private rooms with nurse supervision. They are sent home the next morning.

However, the procedure is still considered experimental because no long-term U.S. data is available. Two- and three-year studies have been done in Brazil and Iran.
