Gastroenterologist Dr. Sohail Shaikh First NJ Physician to Remove Eroded Lap Band With Endoscopic Technology

Interventional gastroenterologist Sohail N. Shaikh, MD, is the first physician in New Jersey to remove an eroded lap band using endoscopic technology, according to a news release.

Dr. Shaikh is a member of the medical staff at St. Joseph's Healthcare System, based in Paterson N.J., and practices out New Jersey Advanced Gastroenterology in Woodland Park, N.J.

Dr. Shaikh performed the minimally invasive procedure on a female patient who had the lap band put in about six years ago. The device became imbedded, requiring the procedure.

"By using minimally invasive techniques, the patient can go home earlier, in little if any pain, and with less risk of complications," said Dr. Shaikh, in the release. "In this case, using endoscopy and state-of-the-art techniques, we were able to remove the eroded lap band without major surgery, which would have meant days in the hospital and possibly weeks of recovery. The patient was home in less than 24 hours, ready to get back to her life — pain-free."
