Clear Liquid Diet Before Colonoscopy Not Essential

Researchers found colonoscopies were as successful on patients allowed a full liquid diet, which included foods such as pudding and oatmeal, as on patients restricted to clear liquids, according to findings presented at the American College of Gastroenterology annual meeting and a MedPage Today report.

Patients were randomized into two groups and were given either a full liquid diet that included items such as milk, ice cream, cooked refined cereal and sherbet, or a clear liquid diet. Polyp detection was the same in both groups: eight of 15 patients for patients on a full liquid diet and six of 19 patients on a clear liquid diet. Completion time and patient satisfaction rates were similar for both diets.
