Benefit for all: Why healthcare costs and quality should be transparent — 4 notes

Transparency in healthcare is a necessity in achieving better population heath, enhanced overall healthcare, lower rate of cost and spending growth.

Here are steps for increasing transparency:

1. Because consumers are forced to pay more out-of-pocket for medical services, the health insurance marketplaces must provide more comprehensive information to consumer to ensure consumers pick the best plan for what they need.

2. States should set up all-payer claims databases or another method of that nature in order to maximize the availability of data. Thus, consumers would better understand where their money is going and the costs associated with medical services.

3. Any individual working in the healthcare industry whether that is providers or insurers should utilize the existing information available on healthcare costs, quality and efficiency of care.

4. Providers must facilitate conversations with their patients pertaining to costs, quality and care appropriateness to reduce money being spent on unnecessary care.
