What's your biggest pet peeve at work? A recent study from Projectplace took stock of workplace inefficiencies and created some interesting figures on just where time and resources are being wasted and where employees are dissatisfied. The following are findings from a survey of more than 1,200 project managers across many different organizations, adapted from Forbes.
1. Little inefficiencies every day add up. Managers can waste as much as 20 days per year due to using inefficient work methods.
2. Projects can get slow and expensive, and quickly. Nearly 20 percent of projects run late. Nearly 15 percent of projects are over-budget. These numbers both increase dramatically as the number of projects a single person manages increase.
3. IT adoption is sluggish. Only half of managers feel their organizations support the use of new technology.
4. Who knows what the organization is keeping close to the vest? It's unclear. Sixty-four percent say they can access sensitive organizational data, but only 50 percent can see that document's footprint (who has read it, changed it or shared it).
5. Email is a major source of office angst. One third of managers are stressed because of the amount of email they receive. Nearly 40 percent say finding specific emails is difficult and 26 percent are frustrated with the email limits on their inboxes.
6. Long-distance communication is frustrating. Thirty-seven percent of managers said communication with remote teams was difficult and stressful.
