5 family vacation spots for physicians

Here are five family vacation recommendations for physicians from Medscape's "30 Great Vacation Ideas for Doctors" report.

1. The Greenbrier (White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.): Located in the West Virginia Allegheny Mountains, the resort includes activities like horseback riding, hiking, fishing, golf, paintball, kayaking and a casino. There is also an Adventure Zoo and other activities for the kids.

2. Carmel (Calif.) Valley Ranch: The ranch includes Mission Trail, Fischerman's Warf, Cannery Row, an aquarium, 20 golf courses, parks, old adobes and trendy shops as well as art galleries. The site is located near redwoods and a wine-growing region. There are pools, mountaintop yoga and an apiary nearby.

3. Bryson City (N.C.): The city is located near the southern Appalachians with the Nantahala National Forest and Great Smoky Mountains National Park nearby. There are hikes available along with the Cherokee Indian Reservation, museums, waterfalls, fishing and a casino.

4. Washington, DC: The nation's capital includes the Smithsonian museums such as the National Air & Space Museum and National Museum of Natural History. There are 60 other museums and the White House to choose from. Washington, DC is especially front-of-mind with the primaries and election occurring this year.

5. Sequoia National Park (Three Rivers, Calif.): The Park is four hours from Los Angeles or San Francisco and includes mountains, foothills, canyons and some of the world's tallest trees. There are several types of trails, overnight wilderness trips and museums. Visitors can picnic, tour caves, engage in rock climbing and winter sports are available.
