Pennsylvania Surgery Center Closes Doors Due to Low Case Volume

Crossroads Ambulatory Surgery Center in Brownstown, Pa., has closed its doors because of limited case volume, according to a Penn Live report.

The $10 million surgery center, which opened in 2008, operated as a joint venture between 17 physician investors and Ephrata Community Hospital. The hospital became the sole owner in July, three months before shifting the center's cases to the hospital's operating rooms, according to the report.

Before the center opened, investors predicted it would perform 140-150 cases per month. Physicians said they wanted a more central location and more capacity for growing case volume, and hospital officials believed the center would ease the burden on Ephrata ORs.

The closure and change in ownership came as a result of the faltering economy, which has forced patients to delay elective surgeries. In addition, the hospital has improved its scheduling and turnover times, opening up more OR time for additional cases.
