UAB Medicine implements AthenaCoordinator, aim to improve coordination in ambulatory care — 4 key notes

The University of Alabama at Birmingham, which includes UAB Health System, and athenahealth will work together as UAB Medicine is implementing the athenaCoordinator Enterprise patient access services, according to a release.

Here are four things to know:

1. The service is aimed to streamline care transitions and patient referrals in UAB Hospital's Kirklin Clinic, a multispecialty ambulatory care site.

2. With the services, UAB feels their staff will be better prepared before a patient shows up for an appointment, as they will be pre-certified and have their insurance and referral information completed.

3. The service aims to minimize the risk of billing errors and unnecessary reimbursement for follow up post-care.

4. UAB Health System CEO Will Ferniany believes this announcement is part of many important initiatives for UAB Medicine.
