Recalled Alcohol Wipes Still Being Used

Recalled alcohol wipes responsible for at least two patient deaths may still be in use, according to a Journal Sentinel news report.

Since Dec. 2010, H&P Industries issued five voluntary product recalls due to bacterial contamination found in its products, including its medical wipes and pads. The alcohol pads, which are used by clinicians to clean the skin before an injection or incision, can also be purchased over the counter by consumers.

Despite the recalls, at least one Milwaukee resident discovered she possessed a box of the contaminated wipes, which she purchased at a local Walgreens store. No signage was posted related to the recalls. The FDA asserts the recalls are effective but will not release audit reports about H&P and its distributor Triad Group.

The FDA has since filed a consent decree of condemnation, forfeiture and permanent injunction against H&P Industries, The Triad Group and three individuals that will prevent them from manufacturing and distributing products.
